As I watch the election returns coming in and reading stories on the internet, its the first time I have ever felt genuine goosebumps and chills as a result of elections in the United States. Obviously, millions of Americans are feeling the same thing. Its quite amazing to see the lines of people voting and to read of accounts of people feeling that they are a part of history. During the next 2-3 hours, Obama will be declared the victor and hopes of the US and the World will be squarely on his shoulders. I sincerely hope that expectations will not be too high (which they will be), for he then will be doomed to failure no matter what the results.
This is definitely an historic night for people to remember and I think a feeling of hope in a country that has not had this since 1992 when Clinton took office.

In 2005, Merrill Lynch CEO Stanley O’Neal boasted that Merrill Lynch had “the right people in place as well as good risk management and controls.” In a devastating article in The New York Times Business Section on November 9th, Gretchen Morgenson demonstrated that O’Neal was wrong on all counts, especially when it came to Merrill’s decision in 2006 to invest heavily in the mortgage industry. Merrill had the wrong people overseeing a line of business that they did not understand and whose risks they did not appreciate.
Two indispensable members of O’Neal’s clique of trusted lieutenants – Osman Semerci and Ahmass L. Fakahany – helped orchestrate Merrill’s belated push into the mortgage industry. Semerci oversaw Merrill’s mortgage operation, and, according to former Merrill executives, often played the role of tough guy who silenced the critics warning about the risks the firm was taking. At the same time, Fakahany, who oversaw Merrill’s risk management, kept the machinery humming along by loosening internal controls, according to the same former executives. Their actions ultimately left Merrill vulnerable to the increasingly risky business of manufacturing and selling mortgage securities.

Two key House Democrats demanded in a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey on Thursday that he explain his recent comments about U.S. counterterrorism officials' controversial policies on detainee interrogations and terrorist surveillance. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. John Conyers, D-Michigan, and Civil Liberties Subcommittee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, insisted Mukasey explain by December 12 why he told reporters Wednesday the officials saw no need for presidential pardons to those engaged in formulating the policies. Mukasey had dismissed the notion there was any basis for President Bush to pardon counterterrorism officials. "There is absolutely no evidence anybody who rendered a legal opinion either with respect to surveillance or with respect to interrogation policy did so for any reason other than to protect the security of the country and in the belief that he or she was doing something lawful," Mukasey said.
